..and ready for the move! Movers are coming tomorrow morning, and we’re pretty much good to go.  Spike is very organized and likes to make lists and spreadsheets whenever we have major life changes.  What would I do without him?!

Breakfast this morning was my new favorite cereal (as of yesterday)–Wegmans maple pecan crunch.  And it was every bit as good today!

Tonight for dinner we had to be somewhere at 6, so we ran over to Baja Fresh and had about 15 minutes to eat.  I’m so glad we did! I LOVED it.  I’ve never been before and had no idea that it wasn’t just another Chipotle or Qdoba.  I had really delicious blackened mahi mahi tacos.

I love fish tacos and get them a lot, and these rank pretty high–especially considering they’re “fast food.”  I brought half home because of the time constraints but will definitely enjoy the rest later this weekend.

Spike got the blackened shrimp tacos, which he also enjoyed.  He said the shrimp was perfectly cooked.

We also shared the chips that came with our meals, and tried 3 of the salsas from the bar–the spicy roja, the salsa verde, and one more mystery kind.  My favorite was the roja–very smokey with decent heat.

I brought the leftover chips home and ate a few tonight as a post-dinner snack. 🙂

Time for bed! Gotta rest up for our busy day tomorrow.

Happy Thursday! This week’s gone by so fast.  Only two more days in our apartment! Movers are coming Saturday to move the big stuff–couches, bed, etc.

Breakfast this morning was a new kind of cereal–Wegmans’ brand maple pecan crunch

Oh. My. Gosh.  So good!! It was like eating a bowl of Christmas cookies.  This may be my new favorite cereal.  And yes, I added just enough milk again this morning to wet it a little.

I saved the green banana and instead allowed it to make a guest appearance at lunchtime, along with a Luna Bar.  Lunas are my favorite of all the bars–at least of the ones I’ve tried. 

This one was iced oatmeal raisin, which–like my cereal–tasted like a cookie.  Hmm…I’m off to a good start today. 😉

We’re finally out of leftovers for dinner, so we treated ourselves to Five Guys tonight!  Sometimes you just need a good burger and fries, you know? 

I got a small burger (i.e. one patty–I made the mistake the first time I visited of ordering a regular one, which comes with TWO patties) with A-1 sauce, mushrooms and pickles.  I love Five Guys because you can totally customize and get whatever toppings you want on your burger.

Spike went really healthy on this one…a double with cheese and bacon. Yikes.  I did have a bite though, and it was delicious.  Seriously.

How did I not know about this place before we moved down here?  I guess they have them all over the Boston area now, but I never visited one up there.

Burger heaven! Enough said.

Do you ever have one of those weeks where, for one reason or another, you end up eating out so many times that you get sick of it?  That’s what this week has been like.  Between company over the weekend, and now packing up our apartment to move into the new house, we haven’t had a single dinner at home since last Wednesday.  Suffice to say this hasn’t been a good week for the wallet or the waistline.

The other night we grabbed a quick dinner at Noodles and Company — it’s up the street from our new place, and I think we’ll be going there a lot.  We both got the meal combos.  Spike had tomato bisque and penne with parmesan chicken.

I had the Chinese chop salad and japanese udon noodles with tofu.

I love the texture of udon noodles.  The black sesame seeds were really nice in both as well.  I really like having a variety of foods at dinner (as opposed to just one thing, which usually leaves me bored and wanting to snack later), so this was perfect.

We spent ALL DAY today painting the new place.  One room needed the ceiling painted, so I twisted and turned and stretched in all kinds of ways trying to reach into all the corners…it felt like I was doing Pilates!  I’m totally sore now, and we have another full day of painting tomorrow.

We grabbed a quick dinner again tonight, this time from Jimmy John’s.  On Shannon’s recommendation, I got my favorite (the beach club, no mayo) on the wheat bread this time!  It was awesome.  I’m definitely a convert.  🙂

We ate dinner at our new dining room table!  Very classy setup, complete with paper towels and napkins to keep anything from spilling. 😉

Good morning! We celebrated our first day in the new place last night by going to our favorite restaurant, Donna’s.  We were given a gift certificate for Christmas and have been saving it for just this occasion!  Now that we’re paying a mortgage, it’s nice not to have to pay for dinner. 🙂

What we love about Donna’s is that we could literally get something different every time we eat there (which is a lot, by the way), and absolutely everything is amazing.

We started with the meditteranean plate, which included hummus, eggplant caponata (with kalamata olives, peppers, capers and golden raisins), olives and an assortment of pitas and breads for dipping. 

It was excellent! The hummus was really dense and beany.  I’m not a huge fan of olives, but they’re slowly growing on me and I actually liked them in the caponata.

For our entrees, I had the mushroom ravioli with portabello sun-dried tomato cream sauce.  The truffle oil was heavenly!

It was really rich. I ate about 2 and a half of the actual raviolis and saved the rest for later.

Spike had the fall pizza with pears, arugula, prosciutto and balsamic.  He took half home with him, too.

At home we broke out our celebratory dessert that we got at Wegmans the other night–the ultimate chocolate cake!  With a drizzle of Wegmans chocolate raspberry dessert sauce, no less.  

I had a tiny slice with the sauce, and then a couple forkfuls of just the cake itself so I could really taste it.  The cake was absolutely delicious, but I think I actually prefer their ultimate white cake.  We’d love to have that as our wedding cake, but they don’t make it in a big enough size!

Happy belated Valentine’s Day! We had a busy day yesterday, and today it was back to work for me after we did our final walk-through of the new house.  Everything looked beautiful. The only small snag is that the refrigerator we ordered Saturday (and were so excited about) is too BIG! We have to downsize to the 21 cubic foot model instead, which will be nice for the wallet, but a little disappointing nonetheless.

Anyway, back to yesterday’s V-Day eats…

We met the future in-laws for brunch in the morning.  We tried a couple places in town, but everywhere was mobbed (cabin fever, anyone?) so we ended up eating at Cheesecake Factory.  I had a simple scrambled egg breakfast with hash browns and english muffin.  They claimed this was two eggs, but it looked more like four! I ate about a third of the eggs, all of the muffin and most of the potatoes.

Spike got one of his favorites — the Monte Cristo.

After that we spent the afternoon at one of our favorite wineries in northern Virginia, Quattro Goomba’s.  It’s a really fun little place that has live music on the weekends and terrific ‘micro-brewed’ wines.  They don’t grow their own grapes (at least, not yet), but they import them from places like Italy and Chile and then do their magic.

We went to dinner at Not Your Average Joe’s, a place we used to visit a lot when we lived in the Boston suburbs.  There’s one location outside of Massachusetts, and it’s in Virginia.  We were both craving something casual and familiar instead of a fancy affair, and this fit the bill perfectly.

Their bread is amazing…

We split a cup of french onion soup, with croutons made from that same bread.

I had rosemary-skewered scallops with orange-chipotle glaze, served with an israeli couscous mixture with snap peas and bacon. 

I wasn’t that hungry after eating all the bread and soup, so I took about half of it home.

Spike had cranberry-teriyaki chicken with butternut squash cannellonis, served over spinach. Yum! The cannelloni was so rich and creamy.

No dessert after all that! We did buy something special at Wegmans that we’ll have later this week, though. 🙂

Spike and I shopped up a storm today! We had really good luck finding all the pieces we needed for our new house at great holiday sales prices.  And everything will be delivered on the same day next week!

But first, breakfast…

I’m still feeling like a cold is coming on, so I’ve been chugging orange juice.

While we were out at the mall this afternoon, we picked up snacks…

 

His and hers ice cream from Maggie Moos.  His was pumpkin pie with heath bar, graham cracker and caramel, and hers was red velvet cake with brownie, almonds and pecans. Yum!

 

The future in-laws are visiting this weekend, so we met them for dinner at a new pizza place up the street from our new house–Coal Fire.  They got stuck in traffic, so while we were waiting Spike and I shared a calamari appetizer.

 

Spike also tried a new Sam Adams seasonal.  He liked it a lot and said it was a perfect lead-in to spring.

 

For our meal we split a grilled caesar salad (which the waiter warned us would be served warm).  It was really different.  I loved the grilled flavor of the romaine.  The bread on the side wasn’t bad, either. 😉

 

We also split a small pepperoni pizza.  Coal Fire’s ‘special’ sauce was slightly spicy and sweet, which went really well with the toppings.  And I love burnt pepperoni, so I was in heaven.

Sharing everything was a great plan–we got to try a lot of different flavors, but I definitely didn’t leave feeling too full.  We have a bunch of restaurant dinners coming up this week, so I’m trying to behave myself.

We closed on our house today! We’re saving the real celebration for Monday night, after we pick up the keys, but tonight we went out for happy hour at Houlihan’s for a mini-treat.

The traffic was awful so we got there about 30 minutes before the end of happy hour and there were no seats available in the bar/lounge area.  The manager offered to let us partake in the happy hour specials from the regular dining room, and we were happy to oblige.  It was so nice of them!

I started with a pomegranate mojito – yum! It had a really nice minty flavor.

Spike ordered a beer, and we both split two appetizers for our meal.

Both were excellent! We’ve had the spinach dip before and it’s always a favorite.  The lavosh thingys are delicious.  The quesadilla had really nice white meat chicken and not too much cheese, and the onions were nice and soft.

Tomorrow we’re hoping to take advantage of the holiday sales and pick up a few things we need for the new house–namely, a new refrigerator, a new mattress set, and maybe a dining set.
